I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notion
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

APA,MLA,AMA,Chicago,Turabian引文格式簡介:總起來說APA主要是用于心理、教育及社會科學等學科;MLA是用于人文、藝術等學科;AMA主要用于醫(yī)學、健康及生物科學等學科;Chicago主要用于書籍、雜志、新聞等媒體。
在引用文獻時,各個雜志有各個雜志的要求,但多遵循一種規(guī)范。常見的引文格式主要有APA,MLA和Chicago三種規(guī)范,Google Scholar也支持這三種引文格式的輸出。這些引文格式之間有何區(qū)別?本文作一簡要介紹。我也是一邊學習一邊撰寫,就當一個學習筆記吧。
APAAPA是美國心理學會(American Psychological Association, APA)所制定的一種引文格式。APA主要用于心理、教育及社會科學等學科。
APA參考文獻的文中格式一般為作者和發(fā)表日期加上頁碼,而非常見的數(shù)字格式。
最新的APA引文格式是第6版,出版于2009年。官方網站是

,可以在其官方網站找到APA引文格式的最新版本。簡要的概括一下,APA引文格式的要求主要有以下幾個方面:
1、文章格式是雙倍行間,包括參考文獻也是如此。
2、引文要整體縮進0.5英寸或1.27cm。
3、引文排列順序是第一作者姓氏的字母順序。
4、作者的姓氏第一個字母大寫,全名并不要求大寫。
5、如果引文中有2篇或2篇以上的引文是同一作者,排序則以引文發(fā)表年代計算。
6、文章第一個字母要大寫,雜志名稱要全部大寫。
7、雜志及期刊卷要用斜體,期刊的期不要斜體。如果引文是書籍或者報告,題目也要斜體。
8、文章中要是有圖表的話要置于文末,并且要提供原始圖表。
這樣說有些空洞,來幾個例子。其實以下內容您可以忽略。

MLAMLA主(Modern Language Association)要是用于人文、藝術等學科。由Modern Language Association發(fā)布。最新的版本是第7版。
MLA文中的格式一般為作者加頁碼的形式,這點與APA大致類似,但是沒有發(fā)表日期。
MLA就不詳細敘述了,舉個例子就可以明白,現(xiàn)在以下面的文獻為例說明一下。

這兩種格式的作者都是只寫姓,2位作者ALA用&連接,MLA用and連接,3位以上作者都是加et al.
這兩個格式的區(qū)別在于一個是作者+日期,一個是作者+頁碼。
AMAAMA主要用于醫(yī)學、健康及生物科學等學科。
AMA恐怕是最常見的引文格式,在文中是以數(shù)字的形式出現(xiàn)。總體來說大致有以幾個特點:
1、引文根據在文中出現(xiàn)的順序而編號。
2、雜志名是以斜體或者下劃線的形式出現(xiàn)。
3、作者的姓和名首字母都要大寫,如果是6位以上作者,只展示前3位,其它的用et al.省略。
4、雜志名稱縮寫,要加卷和期及頁碼。
5、書籍要加版本,如3rd。
以下例文獻為例

該引文如在文中第一次出現(xiàn),則編碼1,文末格式如上。
ChicagoChicago主要用于書籍、雜志、新聞等媒體。Chicago有時還叫CMS或者CMOS。但是自從1906第一個規(guī)范版本發(fā)布以后,統(tǒng)一稱為Chicago。

除此之外,還有一些其它格式,如 Turabian格式,CSE格式,IEEE格式等等。太多了,都有自己的要求。
其實也不用記這么多,投稿時根據雜志要求來修改引文格式就可以了。
幸好,EndNote已內置了上百種雜志的格式,直接利用就可以了,也不用管具體格式是如何。因為 EndNote 已經為您完全按照雜志要求把引文格式化了。
但是有的雜志要求比較特殊,EndNote 并未收錄其格式要求,此時也不怕,可以EndNote修改引文格式的方法來修改引文格式,然后格式化一下即可。

2020-12-06 labview用I/O Server連接modbus(填坑)

modbus是一種比較通用的協(xié)議,用來做數(shù)據采集很方便,也很便宜,至少比NI的板卡便宜兩個量級,但是配置較為復雜,同時采集速率并不高。對于1s左右采樣間隔的數(shù)據來說,modbus是一種非常合適的方式。
labview使用modbus有很多種方法,其中最方便地第一種就是用共享變量引擎(Shared Variable Engine, SVE)來讀寫modbus的寄存器(類似模擬IO)和線圈(數(shù)字IO)。其他方法比較繁瑣,因此這里只研究了這種labview使用I/O Server訪問modbus的方式,其它的比如采用VISA的modbus串口/TCP VI進行讀寫的方式以及采用OPC服務器進行讀寫的方式在這里就不研究了。
這里采用的win10 64bit中文版系統(tǒng),Labview 2018(和諧版),同時安裝了分布式控制系統(tǒng)(Distributed Control System, DSC),這樣就可以使用modbus I/O Server了,根據官網資料,除了labview,必須還要安裝DSC或者RT模塊,才能使用modbus,其中最好是安裝DSC模塊。
這里的系統(tǒng)架構如下圖所示,Labview負責邏輯和前端展示,與PLC的modbus協(xié)議進行交互是通過I/O Server完成的。I/O Server其實是NI 的共享變量引擎SVE的一種插件。所以在運行的時候需要安裝和啟動SVE。
這個SVE一般在windows里面是以服務形式安裝的,安裝的服務名為NITaggerService,安裝位置是在C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Shared\Tagger。如果是SVE的一些問題,可以查看這個服務是否啟動。但是坑爹的NI沒有說log文件在哪兒,有時候查錯很麻煩。
安裝了DSC之后,就可以啟用modbus I/O Server了,對于中文Win10系統(tǒng)裝labview 2018而言,坑的地方在于你按照官網教程走完是不行的,會出現(xiàn)modbus變量無法讀取的問題,并且顯示鏈接已經斷開。如果你手動啟動SVE服務(即:NITaggerService),當時是可以啟動的,然后你用NI分布式系統(tǒng)管理器(NI distributed system manager)查看變量會不成功,再看服務已經停止了,但是由于沒有l(wèi)og文件,所以我們也不知道它什么時候停止的。
后來發(fā)現(xiàn)一個方法可以修正這個問題:在NI分布式系統(tǒng)管理器中重新編輯一次I/O Server(參考下土),再在“操作”菜單下點擊“啟動本地共享變量引擎”,所有的值就正常了。?
modbus在I/O Server中的的地址設置比較詭異,是按照[數(shù)據解釋類型][功能碼地址頭][PLC格式的起始地址].[位]來區(qū)分的。
比如SD400002,其中數(shù)據解釋類型是SD,表示有符號的雙字整數(shù)(Signed DWord Integer),雙字意味著這是個32位的整數(shù),需要兩個寄存器,功能碼地址頭是4,表示功能碼是3,即modbus的保持寄存器(Holding Register)字段,后面的PLC格式的起始地址是5位的00002,也就是從第2個寄存器開始,連續(xù)取2個寄存器(即00002和00003),組合成有符號的雙字整數(shù)。
至于組合的過程涉及到大小端(Endianness)的問題,大小端涉及到byte order和word order的問題,一個word就是一個寄存器(16位),一個byte是8位,當一個寄存器中的兩個byte組合并解釋為變量的具體取值的時候,可以選擇把哪個byte放到前面,哪個byte放到后面,這就是byte order,大部分情況下,byte order是大端在前(big endianness),而word order則是在兩個寄存器儲存的兩個16位的字(word),如何組成32位的數(shù)據,不同的廠商會有不同的約定,這個就差異比較大了,需要查看手冊。
NI的modbus I/O Server中,word order可以在高級選項中設置,但是byte order是沒有地方可以設置的。
此外,NI還有一個比較坑爹的地方是它的modbus tcp連接不支持502以外的端口。也就是一個IP地址最多只能對應一個modbus,雖然可以靠Unit ID來進行區(qū)分,但是實際使用中也可能存在用不同端口區(qū)分設備的情況。
